Helping at Home
To become a Doctor
Haftam was the very first girl we sponsored alongside Getachew in December 2020. The change in her appearance over two years is striking. In her first letter to us she comes across warm and inviting of connection. Like three other children we sponsor, she also wants to be a doctor when she grows up. We get the sense these children are inspired to help others by the challenges they face everyday. She sounds close to her family and thanks to Save the Children has a school to learn in.
Her first letter to us was written on May 18, 2021 but we didn't receive it until December 2021. Two other children also wrote their letters to us on this day telling us they may be from the same village. This long delay is caused by the route these letters have to take and the impact of ongoing civil war in the region. Letters go by air, truck, bicycle, camel and foot to get to these rural villages.
Haftam like many of the children have drawn a foot ball or possibly a hand ball, both very popular games with the children. It's so good to hear they are playing and healthy.
Haftam is one of the children that were able to send us two letters. Haftam's favorite food we had to look up. It's called Injera, it's a sour fermented flatbread, a staple food of the region. This is also the only time we heard a child speak of music as something they enjoy doing.
